"The Battle of Gettysburg" by Edwin Forbes is a panoramic battlefield scene by Edwin Forbes, depicting Pickett’s Charge on July 3, 1863 — the climactic and disastrous Confederate assault on the Union center at Gettysburg. Forbes, who was present at the Battle of Gettysburg, highlights of the Cannon fire and musket smoke creating a hazy battlefield atmosphere. The Union infantry lines are laid out in firing position on the left. A small farmhouse (possibly representing the Codori or Bliss farms) anchors the scene, and Confederate troops and cavalry are seen advancing from the right in what proves to be a drastic mistake by the Confederate command.

The Battle of the Chesapeake, also known as the Battle of the Virginia Capes was a crucial naval battle in the American Revolutionary War. September of 1781, Washington had British troops surrounded in a siege at Yorktown. A British fleet from New York led by Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Graves was sent to help Cornwallis. A French fleet led by Rear Admiral Francois Joseph Paul, the Comte de Grasse, got to the Chesapeake first and engaged the British. The battle was won by the French, and prevented the Royal Navy from reinforcing or evacuating the besieged forces of Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, effectively securing independence for the Thirteen Colonies.
