"British Retreat from Concord Under Fire from Colonial Minutemen" by Howard Pyle depicts a key moment from the opening battles of the American Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775. Pyle illustrates the British retreat from Concord to Boston, as they were relentlessly harassed by Colonial Minutemen. After the British Regulars destroyed supplies in Concord, they were forced to retreat due to increasing militia resistance. American Minutemen, using their knowledge of the terrain, fired from behind trees, stone walls, and buildings in guerrilla-style warfare. This retreat became a chaotic rout, with hundreds of British casualties, setting the stage for the Siege of Boston.

Currier and Ives was an American printmaking firm headed by Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) and James Merritt Ives (1824–1895) and based in New York City.
