This is a reproduction of the painting of the Battle of Guilford Court House (March 15, 1781) by H. Charles McBarron. General Nathaniel Greene observed as the veteran First Maryland Continentals threw back a British attack and countered with a bayonet charge. As they reformed their line, William Washington's Light Dragoons raced by to rescue raw troops of the Fifth Maryland who had buckled under a furious assault of British Grenadiers and Guards. The British, led by General Charles Cornwallis, had been making significant gains in the southern colonies, but the battle marked a turning point. While the British technically won the battle, they suffered heavy casualties, and their victory was costly. This battle weakened the British forces and ultimately contributed to their decision to abandon the Southern campaign.
