The freezer has a small pipe up to the cooling area - that's how the cooling area is cooled....via the freezer. As cold air drops, that's why the minimum temperature of the cooling area is around 41 degrees. For me, the freezer was the main reason to buy this and the cooling area was for my mixers and therefore just a bonus. The unit is quiet and the blue light is pleasing.
