The Siege began following the battles of Lexington and Concord as the Continental Army started minor skirmishes in the city and began to cut off British supply lines into the city from both land and sea. Boston was the political center of the American Revolution as well as the site of the Boston Massacre in 1770, which began the calls for independence from Colonial rule. This map was published by Sir Thomas Hyde Page and is unique in that it’s a British work created during the revolution and not in the years preceding it. It also bears an inscription detailing the British retreat to Nova Scotia and the of the Battery at Fort Hill. Boston remains one of the most iconic American cities, and its role in shaping the political, cultural, and economic future of the United States cannot be underestimated. Boston is one of the oldest municipalities in the United States and was first settled in 1630. Published in 1769, this map of Boston was produced at a time of great tumult for the iconic American city. Though the Revolutionary war had yet to break out, tensions were high between the colonists and Great Britain. The passage of the Townsend Acts in 1767 had further angered colonists, and Boston was a hotbed for patriot speech and action. Boston’s role in the Revolution was crucial, and this depiction in 1769 paints a unique picture of the city in a time of transition and just one year before the famous Boston Massacre. British troops that had been stationed in the city since 1868 opened fire on a group of pro-independence protestors, and the incident served as fuel for the growing Patriotic movement. Some of the interesting features of this illustration include the details regarding the dates of significant fires as well as outbreaks of smallpox. It also features landmarks that have been filled and re-purposed like Mill Pond as well as prominent features that remain to this day like Boston Common. William Price, the producer of this map, owned the rights to this map, which was initially printed in 1726. Price would amend and update the map re-printing for the following forty years. Street names were added or changed, and new buildings were depicted by shading rather than perspective drawing. The details, additions, and cartouche make this map the best visual record of pre-Revolutionary Boston and an authentic piece of both American and cartographical history.

Boston, Massachusetts, is one of the most iconic American cities, and its rich history dates back to 1635 when it was founded. It boasted not only the vast harbor and port but was also the most populated city until the mid 18th century. The local economy soared amid the shipping and fishing boom, especially in the 1720s, when this map was produced and published. Interestingly this piece of cartographical history contains records of significant fires in the cities history, as well as a notation regarding the smallpox outbreak of 1721, which was the sixth to surge through the city. This was a lively era for Boston, and any fan of American history will understand the importance of the city as the colonies began the long journey that would culminate in the American Revolution. Known for its revolutionary spirit Boston became known for its role as a central point for much of the organizing of American freedom activists. This map transports the viewer back to the time of the great sailing vessels, fully rigged and returning to Boston harbor. The harbor and coastline, in general, have always shaped the cities culture, and it has been a deep part of American Maritime history since its discovery in 1614. Geographically sheltered to the south by Cape Cod, the harbor enjoys a respite from open Atlantic swells and allowed safe passage for exports to Europe. The history of Boston in one of its most defining periods is summed up by this depiction, which shows the progress the city made in less than 100 years.
