The highlight of Paris in the Bella epoque era was the Grand Prix horse race at Longchamp. Afterward the fashionably dressed gathered for dinner at the Armenonville Pavilion, a sparkling restaurant on the shore of Bois de Boulogne, bringing together the many of the beautiful people and varied personalities and classes including the pictured notorious Spanish actress and dancer, La Bello Otero star of the Folies-Bergere. Gervex, sometimes considered an Impressionist, was also an academic and classically trained painter who favored larger works including wall panels. On one of his many travels, Gervex was commissioned to paint portraits of the Czar Nicholas II and the Russian royal family. The color palette is a kaleidoscope of purples, blues, reds, and oranges. For every Ngapa Jukurrpa II artwork sold, a percentage of the sale price goes directly back to the artist. This Aboriginal artwork depicts the water Dreaming and tells a story of two Jangala men, rainmakers, who sang for the rain and unleashed a giant storm. The storm traveled from the east to the west until it reached Warlura, a waterhole to the east of Yuendumu in the Northern Territory. At Warburg, a gecko blew the storm away. The storm continued on, covering the lands with rain and shooting out bolts of lightning, awakening the "Kurdukurdu Mangkurdu Jukurrpa" (children of the clouds Dreaming). The water Dreaming built hills at Ngamangama and stuck long pointy clouds into the ground at Jukajuka, where they can still be seen today in the Northern Territory as rock formations. The water Dreaming continued its travels to Mikanji, a watercourse northwest of Yuendumu, where the storm was picked up by a "Kirrkarlanji" (brown falcon) and taken farther north. At Puyurru, the falcon dug up a giant "Warnayarra" (rainbow serpent). The serpent carried water with it to create another large lake, before traveling on through other locations and eventually arriving at Gurindji country to the north. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings, traditional iconography is used to represent the "Jukurrpa" (Dreaming). Short dashes are often used to represent "Mangkurdu" (cumulus & stratocumulus clouds), and longer, flowing lines represent "Ngawarra" (flood waters). Small circles are used to depict "Mulju" (soakages) and riverbeds. "Daybreak" by Tadashi Asoma. Tadashi Asoma was born in 1923 in Japan. He studied painting in Paris under a scholarship received from the Japanese Government. After completing his studies, he found love in American style painting and decided to move to New York with his family. Painting the changes of the seasons was his strong suit and was a well-known, master colorist at the time. He continued painting in Garrison until he died in 2017. He was in both group and one-man exhibitions around the world. You can find his work today in many corporate and public collections.
