Produced and illustrated by native Montanan Irvin ‘Shorty’ Shope, this pictorial map shows the iconic state in a period of significant growth, transformation, and prosperity. Shope was a founding member of the Cowboy Artists of America and was a ranch hand and cattle driver before becoming a commercial artist in 1935. This depiction illustrates the major economic drivers for Montana in the margins, including trapping, mining, cattle and sheep ranches, and lumber harvesting and milling. This stunning piece also includes the most famous national park, Yellowstone. Pictorial maps bear a distinctive style and unique aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. They also feature creative captions that illustrate Montana’s rich history and tales of the Wild West. Many of these recount stories that detail the establishment of cities and towns, notable events, and historical figures from its earliest eras until it achieved statehood in 1889 as the 41st state in the Union. The construction of a network of railroads throughout the latter portion of the nineteenth century had expanded access and created a population boom that would last for decades. Many settlers arrived in Montana following the passage of the Homesteading Act of 1862, which granted settlers free federal land if they could verify that they improved the land through agricultural features such as irrigation. It looks nice enough and functional for a spare bedroom that does not get used often. It is cheap, put together yourself furniture and the wood is very soft. I can imagine it getting very marked up with use. The drawers are not smooth at all and stick depending on what kind of carpenter you are. The price is fair for what you get therefor cannot be disappointed. There is also a nightstand that matches this dresser although a different brand. But together, you can’t tell the difference.
