The skipjack arose near the end of the the 1800s. Dredging for oysters, prohibited in 1820, was again made legal in 1865. Boats of the time were unsuitable, and the bugeye developed out of the log canoe in order to provide a boat with more power adapted to the shallow waters of the oyster beds. The bugeye was originally constructed with a log hull, and as the supply of appropriate timber was exhausted and construction costs rose, builders looked to other designs. They adapted the sharpies of Long Island Sound by increasing the beam and simplifying the sail plan. The result was cheaper and simpler to construct than the bugeye, and it quickly became the predominant oystering boat in the bay. Debate remains to this day about the origins of the name. Some speculate it came from a name New England fisherman called the flying fish, bonita. Still others claim it is derived from an archaic English term, meaning an ''inexpensive yet useful servant.'' Marylands oyster harvest reached an all-time peak in 1884, at approximately 15 million bushels of oysters. The oyster harvest has since declined steadily, especially at the end of the 20th century. The size of the fleet has likewise declined. New skipjacks were built as late as 1993, but a change in the law in 1965 allowed the use of motor power two days of the week. As a result, few of the boats are operated under sail in commercial use; instead, a pushboat is used to move the skipjack, and little dredging is done except on the days that power is allowed. At one time, the number of skipjacks produced is estimated at approximately 2000; today, they number about 30. The future of the fleet remains in doubt as efforts continue to restore the productivity of the oyster beds. The skipjack was designated the state boat of Maryland in 1985.

This is museum-quality, a FULLY ASSEMBLED replica of the U.S.S. Constellation, last sail-only warship designed and built by the U.S. Navy. This is an “Exclusive Edition” where the model has a unique serial number etched into the hull, which allows us to identify production date, the material used and all other production information of a model. Master craftsmen using historical photographs, drawings or original plans meticulously handcraft these highly detailed wood models from scratch. They are built to scale with high-grade wood such as western red cedar, rosewood, and mahogany. They are 100% hand built individually using plank-on-frame construction method and are similar to the building of actual ships. Each model requires hundreds of hours to finish and must go through a demanding quality control process before leaving the workshop. This amazing model of the USS Constellation features plank on frame, two decks, and one stretched a ferocious row of metal cannons on each side of the ship. The front bowsprit and three large masts are connected securely using advanced rigging and lines painstakingly knotted and fastened by hand. Each yard has an attached hand-stitched rolled-up sail made of fine linen. The glorious American flag is attached to the mizzen yard. Metal anchors and a wooden rudder are visible on the front and rear of the ship. On the deck, there are stationed metal cannons, metal steering wheels, wood ladders and crane, captain’s dining and sleeping cabin, and many other handcrafted ornaments. There is also an exquisite detailed admiral’s quarter on the stern with beautiful decorative brass ornaments and an authentic hand-built lifeboat with ribs and planks. Geologically Antarctica is similar to the southern Andes Mountains. The original Amundsen-Scott South Pole station was built near the center of the continent and was built in 1956, making it the first permanent structure. The station is the southernmost habitation on Earth and is named after the first two explorers to reach the South Pole. Norwegian Roald Amundsen was the first to reach the South Pole in December 1911, followed one month later by the British expedition led by Robert F. Scott. The dome was abandoned in 1975 after the construction of a geodesic dome. Eventually, the dome was also left behind after the completion of the current station, which was officially dedicated in 2008. The unique climate in Antarctica makes it particularly well suited for conducting astronomical research due to the lack of light pollution or cloud cover. Scientists from around the world also study glaciers, geophysics, meteorology, and bio-medicine in the station.
