All surface and sides are made of leather which gives it a classy look. The tile was designed with high durability, water, and scratch-proof embedded masterpiece background. Each tile is handcrafted (pained and engraved) so the paint on the tile will not fade by repeated use. The set is fabulous. My only disappointment was that I did not read the description in its entirety and all of the tiles were the Van Gogh self portrait.
