These whiskey barrel planters are great. Our family has had three more just like them for 16 years. One is used as a small water feature with a bamboo fountain and the other two as traditional planters. Because of the size and material the soil does not dry out too quickly. For these two new ones, I've converted them into self-watering planters using sturdy 22 inch saucers and 1/2 inch solid-braid nylon rope for wicking the water up into the soil. These are huge! And perfect for our streets cul-de-sac, they make a statement. They were lightweight enough for a 60 something woman to unbox. With help, we drilled a larger drainage hole from the inside and filled it with rock and sand. That still leaves you with half of the pot to hold dirt and plants. They are now so heavy that hopefully they can withstand what Florida can dish out. They have remained as bright as when first placed. In the winter, if a planter is to remain planted, they should be raised up off the ground making sure not to block the drainage hole. This allows the planter to drain and will prevent the planter from freezing to the ground. If the planter is not to be planted, it should be brought inside to a garage or shed. If this is not possible, follow the steps above, but turn the planter upside down to prevent it from filling with snow and ice. It should then be covered or wrapped with burlap or any absorbent material and then wrapped with dark plastic to prevent it from accumulating moisture.
