Flatwoven in high-quality wool, the alternating rows of burgundy red and navy blue with pale green and vibrant orange eye motifs (protective symbols for warding off evil) are finely woven in between an uncommon Turkish symbol representing a wolf’s mouth, though they bear resemblance to the lifeline symbol for maternity and fertility as well. Paired with the bright hooking ‘s’ motifs symbolizing a weaver’s tools, the tone of protection and warding danger permeates this rug’s tribal, cultural significance and rich history. Additionally unique to this piece among similar tribal antiques is the forward-thinking, highly stylized white and black outlines surrounding the dominant motifs in a very fluid, particular motion seldom seen with such symmetry in these ancestral pieces.
