Working in the fabulous folk art form known as alebrijes, Oaxacan artisan Esteban Hernandez creates this unique sculpture. He carves the pegasus from copal wood, which is then carefully painted by hand in minute detail with a rainbow of colors. Removable parts are detached for safe shipping. The folk art tradition of alebrijes dates back to the 1930's in Mexico City. A man named Pedro Linares was taken ill, and in his fevered dreams he saw a strange land populated with curious creatures--a donkey with wings, a rooster with bull's horns, and a lion with the head of a dog. The beasts all ran at him, shouting "alebrije! alebrije!". Upon his recovery, Linares began recreating the fantastical creatures he had seen in his dream. The art form gained popularity, and alebrijes are now made of wood as well as papier mache.

I ordered this for a dear friend, thinking Wayfair had run out of the free Tried & True inventory of the same item. When I saw this product, it screamed her name to me. Once I put it in the shopping cart, I realized I could still order it for the T&T program, but not with another item. Back in October 2023, my friend went through a horrific house fire, fleeing the property for her life with pretty much just her dogs & losing everything else. This was an arson & other adult members of her family also experienced horrors during the same crime spree. Forward to now (June 2, 2024), my friend just closed on a home in a different city a few weeks ago but it's been only six days since she moved in--(she had new flooring installed & had the entire interior repainted) & is in the process of rebuilding her life. Just yesterday I traveled the two hours to visit, see her new house & present this beautiful art to her. The words describe her to a 'T'! With great emotion, she asked, "Where did you find this!?" (Now isn't that the goal.) Now on to the actual review: the artwork is simple with the arrow filling in the piece horizontally & some vine delicately & whimsically wrapped around the arrow. The words, however faded, are strong & describe only the most unbreakable spirit, which truly embodies my friend. She chose to hang it above her bed. I love the way the vines in the piece mimic the vines in her bedspread, a very happy accident no one could have predicted, in contrast to the tragedy she & three other households endured. The words may be a bit too faded out for me, but this may very well have been the artist's intention.
