Thomas Paine, Portrait and Quote, "These are the times that try men's souls." is probably Paine's most famous quote. It comes from his pamphlet The American Crisis, Number 1, published on December 19, 1776. The full opening line reads: "These are the times that try men's souls: The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." Paine wrote this during the American Revolutionary War to inspire perseverance amid hardship, as General Washington's army faced severe challenges as they retreated through the Jerseys with the British on their heels.
