With its crinkled fronds, Queen is among the most graceful of the palms. This stately landscape palm grows more frost tolerant as it ages, but won't stand up to a hard or prolonged freeze. A good candidate for oceanfront landscapes and larger homesites inland, provided there are few gusts of hot wind to tatter its fronds. The best and most adaptable candidate for tropical, semitropical and postmodern landscapes. Although it casts little shade, this palm makes a fine street tree. Grow as a single specimen or in clusters of three to five. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after establishment. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.

Trumpet trees are loved for their dazzling display of blossoms that burst forth ahead of their leaves in spring. Traditionally known as Tabebuia, some of these trees are now recognized with a different botanical name. The common name refers to the elongated flowers that resemble a trumpet. Handroanthus chrysanthus (formerly Tabebuia chrysotricha), is commonly called golden trumpet tree. This fast growing tree is great for Central and South Florida. Reaching a height of 25 to 35 feet tall with a spread of 25 to 35 feet, H. chrysanthus has brilliant yellow flowers that bloom in the spring just after the foliage drops away. These trees are relatively easy to grow and it seems that everyone wants one when they are flowering. This deciduous tree is native to South and Central America, and has been introduced to the Caribbean islands, United States, Kenya, and India. It grows best in warm and moist climates when in full sun. Sometimes evergreen but most often deciduous, golden trumpet tree has four-inch-long silvery leaves with tan, fuzzy undersides. These leaves drop for a short period in April to May, and it is at this time that the trees put on their heaviest flowering display, the trumpet-shaped, bright yellow blossoms appearing in clusters. Some trees produce a small number of flowers sporadically throughout the warm season. The eight-inch-long seeds which follow are brown, hairy, and persist on the tree through the winter.

It is a tropical tree which makes a fine addition to a South Florida gardener's backyard fruit orchard. A native of the West Indies, it is a small, attractive, fast-growing tree that won't reach much more than 12 feet, although it can be kept clipped back to shrub size. It's leaves are small and evergreen, borne densely on rather brittle branches. The branches of some varieties droop; others are quite upright. The bright pink, five-petaled flowers are small but pretty, with the trees blooming mainly from April through October although some blossoms appear year around. Fruiting is from May to November, but again, a few cherries may be picked now and then throughout the winter. Barbados cherry, or acerola, is a large, bushy shrub or small tree that reaches mature heights of about 12 feet (3.5 m.). This attractive shrub produces thick, bright green leaves. Small, pinkish-lavender flowers bloom from spring to fall, and may pop up year round in warmer climates usually after irrigation or a rainfall. Harvest Barbados cherries when the fruit is fully ripe. Wear gloves, though, because the fuzz on the stems and leaves can irritate the skin, especially when the tree is young.

A low-branching, bushy tree originating in Central America, Annona muricata is known as soursop in English and guanabana in El Salvador and other Spanish-speaking countries. The soursop tree, which can grow from 25 to 30 feet tall, produces an oval-shaped fruit with tender yellow-green skin and white, juicy flesh often made into drinks, sherbet, preserves and sweets. Grown in a variety of countries, including Mexico, the West Indies, northern South America, China, Australia and Africa, soursop prefers a tropical climate and cannot survive a frost, often suffering damage at 30 degrees Fahrenheit and dying at 26 degrees Fahrenheit. U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 and 11 in rich, well-drained soil with 5 to 6.5 pH suit this warm-weather plant best. Water soursop plants often enough to keep the soil moist, but not wet, during hot weather. When the weather turns cool in the winter, reduce water intake. Soursop plants tolerate drought well, but can develop pest problems if kept too wet.

A Eugenia plant is an Australian evergreen with small, glossy green leaves. Although it can grow into any shape, the plant responds especially well to training as a ball, either a single ball or several balls connected by a central, bare stem. Eugenia is quite resilient and requires little special care when given the right growing conditions. It can grow well in full sun outdoors, but in regions with hot summer sun, a spot that gets full sun for the morning hours, followed by partial shade in the afternoon, is ideal. An outdoor-grown Eugenia topiary thrives in any type of garden soil that's well-drained and does poorly in soil that tends to stay wet for long periods. If your soil is high in clay, adding sand at planting improves its drainage.
