Had we gone with the 13" we wouldn't have to touch up paint around it, but I also like that they aren't that noticeable and something bigger might have been too obtrusive as this is just a small rectangle between multiple rooms. Love these beds. Best with a 12” mattress without boxspring so you can open the secret compartment. Twin is best but we put a twin xl on one of them and no support issues! Final product was fine. It was the directions that were less than spectacular. I was underwhelmed with the illustrations. I also believe the instructions should have actual size illustrations of the various bolts instead of "23 mm" for instance. I don't to metric.
