Small-Space Makeover: A Bright, Open Living Room

How one editor defined a stylish seating area in her tiny studio apartment.

While they're compact and efficient, small studio apartments often lack defined living rooms and the extra space needed to entertain friends. Wayfair editor Olivia Rassow knows this challenge well. Her apartment is on the top floor of a traditional brick townhouse with a front door that opens directly into the one-room living area. With the holiday season coming up, she wanted to brighten her space and make the most of her city-square footage while adding additional seating for guests.

Rassow worked with style director Donna Garlough to re-imagine the room and select the right pieces. “The space had great character, but we wanted to infuse it with a fresh, modern vibe,” says Garlough. "Our plan was to utilize the existing sofa and artwork, and build out the look from there.”

Since the living room space of the home is open to the kitchen, the first decision was to put down a large rug and define a separate seating area. “The flatweave style we chose has a small black-and-white pattern, which adds interest without overwhelming the room," explains Garlough.

Instead of a wood-finish coffee table, the pair opted for a white one with thin metal legs that provides optimal surface area without weighing down the room. In the corner, a traditional side table was replaced with a multipurpose piece. "We were thrilled to find a modern floor lamp with an integrated table—it might be my favorite piece in the room," says Garlough.

When deciding where to place additional seating, the choice was easy. “When you enter the apartment, you eye goes right to the amazing bay window, making it the perfect spot for a pair of chairs with a statement-making silhouette," says Garlough. The two brought in a pair of s-shaped wicker chairs with a flexible wire frame. "They have modern lines, but they’re a natural material, so they don’t feel stark or cold—they're the perfect combination of familiar and new," explains Garlough.

Now, with just-right additions and seating for guests, Rassow can relax and host friends in a well-defined space that feels more open than she ever thought possible.
