Most glass subway tiles are simply painted on the back without a protective covering, this leads to imperfections, scratches and defects throughout. The tiles are hand crafted using special techniques that consist of first painting the back with the desired color, then protecting the dried paint with a ceramic coating and firing it in a kiln.
