A regular accent chair is easy to confuse with a swivel chair, and the base is what separates them. A swivel chair sits on a rotating base, and many product names call out a 360-degree turn. A regular accent chair uses a fixed base, so the seat keeps the angle you chose when you placed it. Barrel, wingback, club, and lounge shapes show up on both. When you want that shape without the spin, look through accent chairs and choose one without a swivel base.
Seat width is grouped as small (under 26 inches), standard (26–35 inches), or oversized (over 35 inches). Those wider arms on an oversized seat need more clear floor to turn than a standard seat does. Read the seat width and the overall width in the dimensions before you buy, because the overall width can be wider than the seat. A chair-and-a-half is the design to look for when two people share one seat. It needs a longer stretch of wall than a standard armchair.
The base stays planted while the seat turns, so a side table or a wall has to sit outside that path. It won't rock you, and it won't drop into a recline. If you want to lean back and put your feet up, recliners are the closer match. If you stay with the swivel instead, compare weight ratings of up to 100 pounds, 101–200 pounds, 201–300 pounds, and over 300 pounds. Match the rating to the person who will use the chair, and confirm the number in the product specifications.
A rocking chair and a swivel chair get mixed up, and they don't move the same way. A swivel chair rotates from side to side on its base. A rocking chair tips forward and back. You can stay seated and turn toward the conversation in a swivel chair. Shop rocking chairs when you want that back-and-forth motion instead.
At a desk you need wheels and a height adjustment, so an office chair is the right seat. A living room swivel chair is an upholstered accent seat for the sofa side of the room. For that living room seat, plushness is the next decision. Firm means sturdy with little give, medium balances softness and support, and soft is the deep cushion. Stain-resistant fabric and removable cushions help when the chair is used every day.
