The clock needs to be plugged in, in order for the lighting to work via the pull string next to the cord. It also takes 1 AA battery for the basic clock features to work that are nice and silent. No Ticking sounds! I gave it a 4 star rating because the quality of the materials is average. It’s very lightweight and feels like plastic instead of metal, as described in the listing.
