Pleated Shades

When designing a room, the window treatments set the tone. Colors used in the windows can blend or contrast against primary or secondary colors in the room design. Pleated shades are a popular way to add function and texture to a room. This type of shade is usually made from fabric and when down, completely covers the window. Raising the shade causes the pleats to fold flat at the top of the window, presenting a clean look. Use these shades alone or in conjunction with drapes or curtains. Discover all the different types of window coverings in our guide.

What is the best way to use pleated shades as an accent item? A good way to blend window treatments into the room is to choose shades in the hues of the secondary color used in the room decor. This supports the primary room color and keeps the design in the room flowing and pulled together.

What is the difference between cellular and pleated shades? These two shade types could best be thought of as cousins. Their basic construction is the same and both work the same way. The difference is found in the layers of the shade material. Cellular shades have a honeycomb lining that works as insulation for hot or cold conditions.

What types of materials are the pleated shades available in? The shade materials are faux wood, synthetic fabrics, and paper-backed. The synthetic fabrics are most often polyester rayon blends, which hold their shape and stay wrinkle-free. The paper-backed designs have crisp edges to their folds and are the most efficient at blocking light.

Changing the window treatments to pleated shades can update the entire look and feel in the room. From the smallest bathroom to the largest living room, the texture of the pleats will accent the decor. For homeowners that don't want a pull cord, there are models that use the bottom pull method to raise and lower the shade. In solid colors, blend or create a contrast depending on the hues chosen. Stripes are another way to create an accent that also lends a vibrancy to the room with the dual use of color.
