Types of Window Coverings
Use our guide to find the perfect look for your windows.
Few design elements complete a space the way window treatments do. They are the finishing touch to a room's overall style. But because there are so many types of window coverings, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. In this guide, we'll describe the different options for dressing your windows so that you can make the right selection for your needs.
Types of Window Coverings
Sheer Curtains: These let in maximum natural light for a bright and airy space.
Semi-Sheer Curtains:These curtains filter out some natural light for a softer, more diffused brightness.
Room-Darkening Curtains:These types of window coverings filter out more than half the light.
Blackout Curtains:These curtains block most light. "Max blackout" window coverings block 99% of light to completely darken a space.
Horizontal & Vertical Blinds: Blinds are window coverings that feature horizontal or vertical slats. These slats – which are made of wood, plastic, or other solid materials – can be tilted for light control. Typically, blinds with horizontal slats and used on windows, and those with vertical slats are used on patio doors.
Roller & Roll-Up Shades:These shades consist of a simple roll of fabric/woven material on a rolling mechanism (similar to a paper towel dispenser). Roll-up shades are similar – they hang from a rolling mechanism – but they roll up from the bottom rather than down from the top.
Roman Shades: Roman shades feature hidden cords and rings that, when raised, stack the fabric in pleasing horizontal folds.
Tie-Up Shades: These shades have prominent ties that are used to raise the shade in a casual tied-up display.
Pleated Shades: These shades are made of fabric pleats that compress when open and expand when closed.
Cellular/Honeycomb Shades: These shades are like 3-D pleated shades: An air pocket between the front and back of the blind provides insulation!
Tip!
Blinds and shades can be mounted within the window frame or outside it. They can be used alone or paired with curtains/drapes.
Valances: Valances are types of window coverings that can be used anywhere! They're like a short fabric curtain that sits at the top of the window frame. Valances can be used alone or as a complement to any of the window treatments listed in this guide.
As you can see, the types of window coverings you have to choose from are vast! How you decide will come down to your personal style and the amount of light you want your space to have. Ready to get shopping?
