This seven-layer brass oil lamp is a significant piece of ritual object that is crafted to enlighten the seven upper worlds or Heaven. In Hinduism, it is believed that there are seven upper worlds combined, known as heaven. This lamp combines a Samai Vilakku, a peacock lamp, and a Nila Villaku, or columnar lamp. There are seven layers with seven wicks. It is preferred for decorating the temple premises during the festivals. The golden shine of the lamp gives it a regal look. The peacock biting a branch sitting atop the lamp signifies growth and prosperity, and the lamp is provided with a disc-shaped base to collect excess oil and balance the longitudinal lamp. The different levels of the lamps are detachable to ease cleaning and maintenance.
