It has a black velvet backing that accentuates the brightly colored medals and awards. It came with very sturdy hardware for wall mounting but we chose to stand it on a dresser instead. The flag compartment at the top is for a bit larger flag than the one he wanted to display so he affixed a red backing to the wood backing and it looks great .
