The beautiful carnation surrounded by leaves featured on this mat is inspired by an Arts and Crafts wallpaper held in the archives. Compton was designed in 1895–6 for Compton Hall in Wolverhampton, England, the home of Laurence Hodson, and it was probably the result of a joint effort between William Morris (1834–96) and his assistant J.H.
