The clock is quite handsome, and the overall appearance is better than expected. The color is exactly what I was looking for. The brown is very rich with just a hint of red. Dark but not espresso. A little light and it really brings out the character and color. The clock isn’t real wood but it isn’t plastic, which you get on some (often cheaper) clocks. The engineered wood does keep it lightweight, however. My one complaint is to get the clock and chime working is hair-pulling. I followed the directions to a T and the problem is the little hand keeps falling down to around the 6 o’clock mark when you try to set the time. I ended up getting it to work but without the chime.. A few things to point out: the color of the wooden border of this clock was almost a blonde natural finish when I unpackaged it, it seems (based on the review photos,) that the finish fluctuates. I actually had some dark walnut stain that I applied to darken it up, prior to this fix, it was so blonde that it seemed it hadn’t even been stained at all. But more importantly, as others have noted, the number 4 in Roman Numerals is NOT depicted accurately on this clock. All of the other numbers are, so it’s rather strange that the designer made this flaw. Also, because the primary color of the metal framing and numbers on the clock is black, the hands (which are also black) blend in to the clock, so it’s often quite hard to see them. I will likely need to lightly brush the tips of each hand with gold paint to make them stand out. Lastly, other reviewers note that the clock is silent, mine is not, it has a distinctive ticking. You can definitely hear it from across the room. I’m rating it four stars for its light hanging weight and it’s large size. A star off for the number error and the loud ticking.. Jennifer.
