The black finish is a deep matt black. The base is nice and heavy so lamp will not tip at all. I've never had a lamp that has movement and it is such a a fun design. The gentle touch dimmer works well. I'm glad it does not have a foot pedal because they always flicker and then stop working. This lamp is quality and I don't see it ever being damaged or scratched in any way in my house. I hope the bulbs last as they say because there is no replacing them. Lovely lamp, adds a warm cozy feel to the dinning room. Love the fact that it has multiple shades of light for personal desire. The drum of the shade is nicely large and adds a grand feel! Assembly was slightly confusing as the instructions are not very fluent and I am pretty handy. So be prepared to play LEGO with the pieces. lol but fully worth it. Worth the backorder wait. I love it. I don't have a three way bulb for it, so the photo with the light on isn't with the full wattage. Base is solid and I love the lamp shade. I read reviews that said the shade was really big, but I wanted that and it doesn't disappoint. Easy to put together and easy to ensure the shade is straight, which can be a huge issue. Packaged very, very well. My only slightly negative feedback would be the packaging. I really appreciated how well it was done - the lamp is perfect! However the poles were taped to the sides of the styrofoam and I had to work very carefully to remove it. I needed to use scissors and was nervous about cutting tape off of the electrical cord and accidentally cutting the cord itself. The other part of that is there was some tape residue on the pole and cord, but that is me being too picky. I chose this lamp to compliment the pouf, also bought from Wayfair, and to bring in a lighter look against my dark furniture. We just painted our entire bedroom green, to include the ceilings and trim, so I'm looking for lighter things for the reading corner I made.
