The trunk is as it looks. Hinges seem strong but even if they weren't, the wood is so light that it wouldn't hurt fingers. If you are looking for a solid piece of furniture, this isn't it. I think the quality of this trunk/bench and the workmanship is extraordinary. I love the leather work and detail. Unlike other decorative trunks I have seen that seem very fragile this one is sturdy and useful even as a bench if desired. I personally use it to store couch pillows and throws for convenience in the living room. The trunk came packaged very well and protected and is flawless. Although the web site says assembly required there was no assembly required at all. The end handles on mine seem to be more rounded than the web picture shows but I don't have a preference in the shape. The trunk top is very well firmly padded if it were to be used as a bench but I don't intend on using it as a bench. Have built one of two so far. Nice solid wood. Not a huge fan of the plastic inserts twist in design for the construction, but you get what you pay for. Overall, I like these a lot. I wanted something sturdy and basic in this room which houses my home office because I also have a lot of dumbbells and they were on a weight rack which I found to be somewhat unsightly. I had to deduct a star because I could not get the latches attached to the lid, no matter how hard I tried and the pre-drilled holes for the hinges were really not acceptable. In both of these chests, the middle pre-drilled hole was missing entirely. The others were just barely drilled and so I had to ask a friend to come over and help me get the screws fully screwed in.
