This model is simple, but stunning! It is a replica of a Boston Tender, a classic rowing boat believed to have originated along the New York waterfront in the early 1800s. Some hold that the Whitehall rowing boat design was introduced from England. However the famed nautical historian Howard I. Chappelle cites the opinion of the late W. P. Stephens that in New York City there is a Whitehall Street and this was where the Whitehall was first built. Chappelle, Stephens and others agree that the design came into existence sometime in the 1820's in New York City, having first been built by navy yard apprentices who had derived their model to some extent from the old naval gig.

Wow! I love these…but I had no idea they were painted or printed wood (the multicolored all over design); I honestly thought the colored design was fabric and that these were fabric covered boxes! They look like fabric in the pics online, and even in person. It wasn’t until I got them and removed them from the great and careful packaging that I touched them and was shocked that they were all wood. Even better, i thought, because they won’t get pilled or snag over time like fabric would. I also wasn’t expecting them to be so BIG! I mean, I saw the measurements, but the larger one is so much bigger then I imagined it would be…this isn’t necessarily a problem per se, but it does mean that I’ll have to find a different use for the larger one then I planned, which is fine. Occasionally I find things on here that I just absolutely adore. This is one of them! Made of solid wood and just has a really nice look and feel to it. I printed out labels for all the little inserts on a piece of decorative Card stock. Otherwise I would never know what was in the drawers there are so many! Surprisingly even though the drawers are fairly small, they actually fit quite a bit of stuff. The bottom two are a bit wider and deeper and surprisingly hold my ruffler feet – which are fairly large if youre not familiar with sewing machine pieces. Holds lots of stuff.
