Got compost!

from Ashburn, VA– Verified Buyer

Most reviews here don't talk about the actual end product, so I waited a whole year to write this review. Bought this in Aug 2012 and filled one compartment with my kitchen scraps for about 3 months with occasional turning. I also used a small amount of previous compost for inoculation which contained some earthworms. When the compartment got full, it got quite heavy and turning was difficult and at one point I stopped turning. Then came winter and pretty much left it alone. After spring and summer and with very little turning, I have what seems like a fully cooked compost!! Of course it took a whole year to get to this point, but with no turning and pretty much doing nothing, I got compost! I kept on adding more stuff to the 2nd compartment and its full now. So, to summarize
1. Assembly was easy, my husband did it in half an hour.
2. Turning can be very hard and I don't know how I would empty the 1st compartment, with the 2nd one fully filled and not easy to turn upside down. I may have to shovel scoop by scoop. Also, the finished compost only occupies about 3 rd of the compartment.
3. I didn't use a lot of brown material either as I only have little of it. Some occasional shredded paper and pine pellets.
4. The holes on the sides of the composter can put a lot of rain water into the composter making it soggy during rains and not sure if that helped or slowed the process of composting. In summer there were wasps entering through the holes. Also a lot of fruit files if you don't cover the scraps with enough brown layer
5. They could have used stainless steel screws as they rusted in no time.
6. I am in a cold weather, so that could have slowed the process, but I have rarely turned it and don't think used enough brown material, but yet have the compost.
7. All in all, $80 is not a big price and the results are satisfactory. I hope to produce more compost in the coming months and years. It doesn't look very sturdy to last several years out in the elements though.

By the way, I produced compost earlier in a $5 storage bin with holes drilled in the bottom. I would dump my kitchen waste and then layer the top with some shredded paper or wood pellets and repeat until the bin was full. I left the bin alone during winter with no turning. Come spring, it was 60-70 percent decomposed with a lot of earthworms in it which must have entered from the bottom holes. Even though it was not fully cooked, I emptied this into my new raised bed and topped with soil. So, one can produce compost without a tumbling composter too, but what I have in my composter looks more like a dark soil than from the bin.

Great tumbler

Carlo from North Andover, MA– Verified Buyer

For the cost of this item, it is a great system. Took me ~20 minutes to put it together myself. Are there a lot of screws? Yes. But this only means that it is being held together better. Once these get full, you do not want simple plastic clamps as it will start to get heavy, and you want something that will withstand the pressure.

At first I thought the size would be too small, but after adding ~1/2 gallon of material every other day, I still have yet to fill it to 1/4 capacity. This is due to the ongoing breakdown process.

I've been using this for a month or so now, and the rate of decomposition is quick. I try to help the breakdown process by cutting large material smaller (apple cores, pineapple, watermelon, and other large fruit rinds, etc)

I only gave it 4 stars because I wish there were some collection mechanism for the compost tea that drips out the bottom. It is dripping NOT due to flimsy construction, but through holes that are meant to allow a level of air to get into the unit. I'm sure I can whip something together with a funnel, and a small jug, but I'm just being lazy at this point.

Great Composter, Questionable Service

Jenny from Herndon, VA

I purchased this composter after looking into reviews of the Lifetime Dual Composter and noting that many reviewers had issues with the metal locking mechanisms rusting in place. With no metal innards, that will not be an issue with this Yimby composter. As a bonus, the price on this composter is very reasonable. The chambers are a bit smaller than the comparable Lifetime, but should satisfy our home composting needs perfectly.

Assembly of the composter was pretty straight forward, though time consuming, as there are many small pieces to be screwed together. The instructions that come in the box are very basic, but Yimby has a photo tutorial on their website that is very detailed. I did run into a snag during the assembly of my composter (one of the parts was cut to the wrong size), which required me to take the drum apart and wait a full week (with the pieces sitting in my living room) for the replacement part. This inconvenience contributes to the four star rating. The other contributing factor was my experience with Yimby's customer service respresentative. Despite providing what I felt was a clear description of my issue, complete with photos, the customer service representative insisted (via emails with poor grammar and spelling) that I verify that other components had been properly assembled. It was a rather frustrating experience.

Wayfair, as always, did a great job on service, with fast, no-hassle delivery. All said, I would purchase this composter again (and keep my fingers crossed that I don't have any issues) and recommend the item to friends.

A composters dream!

Michelle from Clayton, NC– Verified Buyer

The Yimby tumbler was fairly easy to put together. Lots of screws involved but I did it myself. Just takes a little time and effort. Made really well and worth the money. We blended ours in with the backyard landscaping leaving room to access it when we need compost. It breaks down scraps quickly..we haven't filled up one side yet and its already breaking down. It has two chambers inside so you can compost small batches. Each chamber is large and will take a while to fill it up. It does generate bugs and such outside in that area but its expected due to the decaying matter. A great buy and a gardeners dream!

Easy to use composter

anonymous from Savannah, GA– Verified Buyer

I really like this composter. The tumbling system makes it easy to use. The divider inside works for me because I do not need large amounts of compost at any one time. The divider makes it easy to start 2 batches of compost at different times, so I always have one compost section maturing as I start the second one

Having the composter raised from the ground makes it easy to turn the compost but also has the benefit of discouraging rodents..

My husband prefers a larger amount of compost, so when he is using the composter he fills both sides at the same time for a larger batch.

I'm pleased

Jo Lowe from Pittsburgh, PA– Verified Buyer

Got this as a present for the ever -growing garden, but mostly for me. My back and budget were sagging under heavy bags of store- bought compost. At last, no more lugging! I checked out various composters and this one ranked high in user reviews. Also, I comparing it to different ones I saw in the big- box stores, I love its sturdiness, design, and simplicity. No animals are going to get into it. No parts are going to fall off of it. Best of all, there is little of my work required to go into it. I love gardening, but draw the line at turning heavy piles of compost. I have little upper body strength and I can spin this with ease. I love that there are two compartments for compost and it actually looks nice in the garden amongst the shrubs. My only problem with the unit that the door for adding stuff is a bit small when one upends a bag of mower clippings. The stuff goes in, mind you, but it is a tad messy because 5-10% of it ends up on the ground or in the ridge above around the sliding door panel. But it sits in the garden, so who cares? Brush a gloved fingertip along the ridge or simply spin it and its clean. I'd buy this unit again and just might be doing so next spring. If it unit makes great compost, like the reviews say, one may not be enough.

Our perfect composter

Randy from Garland, TX– Verified Buyer

My wife and I had a pickle barrel composter for several years and the center rod rotted out, so we started looking for something better. Once we got this Tumbler, we knew we had the right one for us. The pickle barrel was tough to open which made us hesitate to put stuff into it very often, but the Tumbler is so easy to use by just sliding the door to the side with one hand while holding our compost collector canister in the other hand. The two compartments mean we never have to wait to put put in new material - we just flip the door around when the first side is full and start filling the second side while the first is busy composting. Gardening will be much better this years and for many more to come.

Pam

PAM from Chicago– Verified Buyer

The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is I needed my husband to help me assemble this. It kept spinning when I tried to assemble it and when I was loading the first load. I finally put a box (my husband's idea) under it to hold it in one place. Other than that it is great. I haven't had the first compost batch but I can already tell it will be easier than the two I have now that I have to manually turn the compost.

Simple affordable solution for home composting.

Robert from Creede, CO– Verified Buyer

I have used composting frames, and static piles that have to be mixed and turned. THe YIMBY Tumbler Composter arrived in a small box, and took only a little effort to assemble. I made one error in assembly of the frame, bur was easy enough to rectify. I had compost ingredients already stock piled, and dropped them in once the assembly was complete. The 2 section compartment is a great idea. One side filled, the other is available to accept material. I turn the body of the unit every 3 or 4 days. I can see progress even in the first few days.

Easy assembly, simple operation.

Good small composter

Katherine from Fort Worth, TX– Verified Buyer– Top 1000 Reviewer

This is nice for the small gardening. It's attractive, easily moved, and easy assembly (lots of screws but easy none the less). I still haven't mastered the art of composting but the bugs appreciate me and I have less trash in my dumpster. The cylinder is easy to turn and the sliding door has markings for each window and can be flipped so you readily now which side is cooking and which is taking waste. I would recommend it.
