This was a gift for a 90 year old. The straight back and ability to adjust the chair height (by taking off the leg extension) were the selling points. She finds it comfortable and easy to use. A beautiful (and discrete) lift chair. ONLY SUGGESTION might be to have an optional remote control for those with weaker wrists.

Update: Wet weather has exacerbated Mom's arthritis, and she has been gratefully using the seat lift. It's easy even for the technically challenged, and very gentle, not scary at all even for a frail person with precarious balance. I highly recommend this chair, and also the matching ottoman.

I ordered the Risedale chair for my 5'3" 86-yr-old mother, and she finds it very comfortable. The ottoman that I bought with it is the perfect height for the chair and allows various changes of position, very important for arthritis sufferers. She particularly likes that it looks like regular furniture, not "medical equipment," and it suits our living room so well that even frequent visitors don't notice the new addition right away. Mom never liked recliners; so many of them aren't comfortable for women. Plus, the ones with the whole chair tilting are rather intimidating. She much prefers the Risedale with the gentle assistance of the seat-only lift, with the arms staying level. The chair is sturdy enough that she has only used the arms to help herself up so far, but the day will come when she needs the lift. Someday, I will probably use this chair myself and be doubly glad that I bought it.

Just the little push needed to get out of the chair. I like the fact that of all the chairs I researched,this chair is the only one I found that only the seat lifted. The other ones I saw the entire chair lifted and could give you that hovering feeling.
