This is the fifth gate I have purchased in the last three years. Each is different and each meets the expectations I had for them. That said, let me say that my expectations are very high. I would rather pay more for quality than less for value. This is a high quality gate (great for the price), is very nice looking and works very well. I selected this particular gate for its height, safety features, and product reviews. I particularly like the self-closing gate feature. In addtion, I appreciated the manufacturer including two different sizes of extentions. This saved me alot of time trying to size the gate and then having ot wait to install it until another extension arrived. Just a word of caution; take your time installing the gate and read all the directions. It is a pressure mounted gate, whether or not you install it using the cups. I would not install this directly on drywall (consider adding 1" x 4" to disperse the pressure on the wall), nor would I install it on stair banisters as the tension could result in damage. And, if I were using it as a "top of the stairs" gate, I would probably replace the cup screws with longer ones as they are a little short for my liking but this is my only complaint with this product. Otherwise, I am very pleased with this gate. Please note that the opening size listed is for the gate only and does not include the opening size if you use the extensions. We got this wide gate to keep our baby in the baby-proofed living area and away from the entryway. This product is actually Cardinal's SS-30 gate, 2 BX-2 extensions, and a T bar. We have no problem opening it one-handed, but it can hurt your fingers a little to hold the latch and pull up. It swings quickly and easily out of the way, coming and going.
We had several obstacles to installing the gate though. First, the hinge bar used to attach the gate to the extensions did not have screw holes appropriately spaced. I called the company, and they sent another one free of charge, which the man said he would personally drill using the BX-2 extension. We had the same problem with the new one and decided to drill a new hole in the extension. The T bar is meant to stabilize the wide gate assembly on a level floor, and you're supposed to either screw it into your floor or use the provided velcro stripes to adhere it to the floor. Well, we have carpet on one side, which is significantly lower than the tile on the other, and we couldn't have effectively adhered the T bar to the carpet, nor did we want to put a hole in the tile. However, it turned out we didn't need the T bar because this assembly was about an inch too big for our doorway. It will work with a doorway no smaller than 71" apparently. The adventure continued, and I ordered a BX-1 extension, which is about half the width of the BX-2. After a few more days and a game of undo-most-of-your-previous-work, the gate was finally up, and there was much rejoicing. Now we have an extra BX-2 extension to return to Cardinal Gates."..." We installed this gate at the top of our stairs about a month ago. It has given me great peace of mind with a crawling baby, and an active toddler niece that comes to visit often. It was a little tricky to install in our particular situation because it had to fit underneath the stair handrail, and attach to a round wooden railing on the other side. We had to screw a 1" by 2" board into the railing post, then attach the gate to the board. It worked beautifully and is very sturdy. We had a hard time finding a gate that was short enough and wide enough, and this one is perfect!
The only complaint I have is that there isn't a stop to keep it from opening too wide and smacking the wall behind it. We stuck a little felt piece on the wall to protect it, but the kids keep peeling it off. Also, the gate doesn't always latch if you just swing it lightly closed. You have to bang it pretty hard, so if the big kids are opening and closing it a lot it tends to be a bit noisy/annoying.
I love that it is a little tricky to open because it also does a great job of keeping my 3 1/2 year old out of the basement. If you have a child 4 or 5 years old that you WANT to be able to open and close the gate, I don't recommend this one. It takes a bit of hand strength to hold in the buttons. It took me a few tries to figure it out. My 6 year old has a hard time with it, but can manage. My 8 year old can use it easily.
The quality and construction are very impressive. The box was totally trashed when it arrive in the mail. I thought for sure it would have broken the gate after looking at the mangled box. But the gate didn't have a scratch on it and has worked perfectly."..." Read more

I purchase this gate for my 13 week old puppy to keep him confined so he will not get into anything when I am unable to watch him. This gate is great before I had a baby gate that we had to lift our leg to get over. Sometimes we would knock the gate down trying to get over it. It took the paint off the wall keep taking it down It damaged my walls. Not with this gate it is wonderful the door that opens up is so convience I had to purchase another one to block off another area. Great gate you can't go wrong."..." Read more
