Kevin O'Brien Studio

Kevin O'Brien Studio was founded in a barn in 1990. Since then the company has set out to change the world, but only in a tiny way. Their goal has always been to make things a little better for everyone who comes into contact with their products, their people, and their conduct. And after 15 years Kevin O'Brien can say that his products are beautiful, his people are great, and his practices over those years still allow him to sleep well at night. So, on balance he thinks they are ahead. At the beginning they made all their products within sight of Kevin O'Brien's drawing table in their studio, using equipment designed and built by themselves. He would draw the design onto clear film, expose it onto a silk screen, then print it onto the velvet, cook it in a large homemade oven (not the safest era for his company), and then scrape off some of the velvet to reveal the image. They would then hand paint the fabric, cut and sew it. He felt that this was the way to make sure everything was well and fairly made. But then he went to Nepal and there he met many very skilled craftsmen and women. So why couldn't he design something for them to make that they couldn't? Well, he could, and did. And all sides were happy. India soon followed. Having all these new options makes their collections so much richer and deeper, and keeps the ideas coming to them as they learn more about these intriguing places. Their collection now includes bedding, robes, decorative pillows, lighting, stuffed animals, and their latest offering, a line of area rugs through Capel Rugs.
