Bathroom Cabinets & Shelving
A vanity is easy to mix up with a storage cabinet, but only the vanity holds the sink and countertop. A bathroom cabinet is the extra piece for towels and bottles, with no plumbing attached. If the sink is staying put, a floor cabinet or a shelf is what you need for additional storage. When you want a mirrored door above the sink, look at medicine cabinets instead.
Engineered wood, solid wood, and bamboo are the materials you will see most often. Many over-the-toilet shelves have a metal frame around wood shelves. Engineered wood is the usual build for freestanding floor cabinets and linen towers. Solid wood and bamboo turn up on smaller floor cabinets, including a few with a finish meant for a humid room. Check the material line on the specifications, because a painted engineered-wood box and a solid-wood cabinet will not wear the same way around steam.
It works better when the floor beside the toilet is already full and the wall above the tank is open. The shelf has to clear the tank and the lid, so measure the height of your toilet before you choose a tall unit. A standard over-the-toilet cabinet might measure around 24 inches wide, 9 inches deep, and 68 inches tall. Floor cabinets often measure about 22 inches wide and 12 inches deep, and they sit beside the toilet rather than over it. Match the product dimensions to the available space in your bathroom before you buy.
In a powder room with no floor left beside the toilet, a wall-mounted cabinet can hang on the open wall above it. It hangs off the floor, so you can clean underneath it with ease. A compact wall cabinet can measure about 27 inches wide and 29 inches tall. A freestanding cabinet is the easier route if you would rather not drill into the wall, but they do require free floor space. Many tall units include a tip-over restraint. Confirm freestanding or wall-mounted on the Specifications tab before you buy.
Open shelves keep fresh towels within reach when you don’t want them tucked away behind a cabinet door. If you would rather hang towels than shelve them, try a differenttowel storage solution in the form of bars, rings, and hooks. Also consider other linen storage methods like baskets and towers when one cabinet is not enough.
