Rustic Fall Tablescape

Create this everyday rustic tablescape in your home in just a few simple steps.

My favorite part about the fall is that the holidays are right around the corner. I love this time of year—the food, the extra layers of clothes, the warm and cozy home decor, and seeing extended family more often.

During this season, I always run into the same small problem: I can't help but overdecorate. "Overdecorate" according to husband anyways--spending a little too much money and going all-out in each room. I just love a nicely decorated, seasonal room!

I recently designed a tablescape, perfect for everyday use, that evokes the beauty of the autumn season. I'm sharing five steps for creating this look for you and your family to enjoy.

1. Centerpiece

The most important feature of any tablescape is a lovely centerpiece.

This year, I used two pots of mums. Sounds almost too simple, right? Oversized mums create drama and presence without being too ostentatious for daily use. They're also a great way to add a natural element and color while avoiding a floral arrangement with a short shelf life.

I wanted to add some character, so I whitewashed and dry brushed the terracotta pots. I love how they turned out, and it was a simple project. Best yet, the mums are easy to remove from the table when company is over and put back when my guests leave.

2. Dishware

My goal was to design this table for everyday use. You can leave this approachable table set and it will be ready when guests stop over, unannounced or otherwise.

Here's how I layered the place settings: I chose faux wood chargers for their rustic and casual appeal. Next, the dinner plate, followed by a napkin. You can use a print to add some visual interest, or go with a classic hue. To top it off, I placed a pasta bowl with decor inside.

I love adding orange and green because it's a true nod to the season. I usually like to stick with neutrals and pops of green, so adding orange is stepping out of my comfort zone. Try anything you like—artichokes, pumpkins, or a red apple if you're a fan of warmer tones. Even a non-food item would be beautiful.

3. Place cards

An important step to this place setting is adding a place tag and holder. (The apples do double-duty here.) I chose to write the word "gather" on each tag for the everyday look. If you're arranging a dinner party, add your guests' names.

4. Runner

Make sure to include a runner no matter the centerpiece. A runner brings the entire table together and is a cozy touch for fall. I always keep a neutral runner on my table—it keeps me from having to switch it out ever time I change the tablescape. A little color or pattern is okay, but don't go with something that is too busy and overpowers the space.

5. Finishing touches

I don't have any stemware or utensils on the table, but if guests are arriving adding the utensils next and glasses right before dinner with make for a completed tablescape..
