DIY Yarn Pompom Tree Topper

Top your Christmas tree with something fluffy and festive this year!

This holiday season, the Wayfair editors pulled together a Christmas tree full of DIY decorations and ornaments. In the spirit of decking the halls, we dressed this tree with only handmade decorations. The oversized snowflakes, chain garland, and ornaments are all made from paper, and this whimsical pompom can be made with yarn of any color and size. It would add a sweet touch of merriment to any Christmas tree, such as the 7-foot tall Vickerman Vienna tree shown above. See our instructions below for how to make this cute DIY tree topper.

Supplies

  • One skein of super bulky yarn
  • Scissors
  • Two pieces of cardboard
  • Tape
  • Pencil or pen

Instructions

1) Draw an 8-inch circle on both of the pieces of cardboard. Then, in the center of each circle, draw a 2-inch circle.

2) Cut out the two 8-inch circles. Then, from the outer edge of the circle, cut a straight line into the smaller circle and cut out the 2-inch circle. Repeat with other piece of cardboard. Tape the line from the outer edge to the inside of the circle.

3) Lay one circle on top of the other. Cut one piece of yarn about 2-feet long and set aside. Tape the end of the yarn onto the cardboard so it doesn't unravel. Begin to wrap the yarn around the cardboard, starting from the inside of the circle

Tip!  If the skein is too wide to fit through the cardboard circle, cut pieces of yarn and then tie as you go. The knots will be hidden in the pompom the end.

Tip!  For a unique look, use multicolored yarn or alternate between colors, thickness, or textures. Festive tinsel would make this project merry and bright.

4) Continue winding the yarn around the circle until the cardboard is covered.

5) Cut the yarn along the outer edge of the circles. Your scissors should slip between the two pieces of cardboard. The yarn should still be secured by the cardboard circles.

6) Slip the reserved yarn between the two pieces of cardboard, and tie a knot. Make sure the knot is tight and secure.

7) Remove cardboard from the pompom. Fluff the pompom and shake off any trimmings. Shear off any extra long pieces of yarn.

8) Use floral wire with a few strands of yarn to secure the pompom to the top of the tree.
