This exceptional piece of American folk art captures the rustic elegance and domestic craftsmanship prevalent during the late Victorian era. Hooked rugs represent a unique tradition, often utilizing recycled fabrics to create durable, highly textured floor coverings. The central composition is dominated by a robust bouquet of roses rendered in muted pinks, deep reds, and sage greens, set against a richly variegated, earthy brown ground. This emphasis on botanical subjects places the piece firmly within the tradition of floral rugs, celebrating nature with an appealing, slightly naive hand. A striking, scrolling border frames the central design, executed in creamy, pale green wool that contrasts subtly with the dense, mottled field. The compact dimensions of this textile make it ideal for use as one of our curated small scatter size rugs, perfect for adding character to an entryway or bedside. The texture is dense and irregular, reflecting the hand-hooked technique which lends the surface a sculptural quality.
