This antique rug originates from the Karabagh region in the southern Caucasus Mountains, an area close to Armenia and Azerbaijan. Karabagh rugs are known for their diverse design heritage, which features a mix of floral and geometric patterns. Symbolic motifs, particularly peonies representing power and prosperity, are common elements in these designs. The rug uses a unique double weft weaving technique, providing stability and durability, indicative of high-quality craftsmanship. Constructed from premium wool, these rugs are designed for longevity. The rug, dating circa 1925, is a reflective example of the tribal style characteristic of Karabagh rugs. Its foundation is navy while the border is an orange hue, creating a vibrant contrast. The main color is blue, enhancing its visual appeal. This rug showcases a traditional and symmetrical design with diamond-shaped medallions running vertically along its central axis. Each medallion is filled with detailed geometric patterns, incorporating smaller shapes like zigzags and cross-like motifs. The primary colors include deep blue, red, orange, and white, with various shades adding depth and contrast to the design. Multiple borders of varying widths surround the central motif, each adorned with different patterns. The outermost border features blue floral and geometric motifs in red, white, and other colors, while inner borders in orange, yellow, and red house unique motifs such as diamonds, flowers, and dots. The innermost border, enclosing the central medallions, displays a repetitive floral pattern on a red background. The design is densely packed with decorative elements, filling the spaces between the main diamond medallions with additional motifs like small stars, octagons, and abstract shapes. This consistent density creates a busy and intricate visual effect, further enhancing the rug's appeal. The structure of the rug features a soft texture that enhances comfort and tactile quality, making it a valuable piece in the world of textile art.
