To avoid scratches, you should blot rather than wipe up spilled liquids. Apply adhesive felt pads to lamps and similar items before placing them on tables. When serving hot food, always use placemats under plates and hot trivets under serving containers. Do not put synthetic materials, rubber or plastic over the wood finish, as they may contain chemicals that could damage the finish. Do not leave newspapers or magazines on the wood, as ink may bleed onto the finish and into the wood. Overexposure to sunlight can harm wood finishes, causing cracking and bleaching that is difficult and expensive to repair. Solid wood furniture is subject to changes in humidity. It contracts in a dry environment and expands in a humid environment. These changes do not affect the structural integrity of the part and cannot be corrected. It is recommended to maintain good humidity during the winter months.
