The AdHoc Rocca mortar & pestle combines solid cast iron and perfectly crafted acacia wood. The elongated shape of the mortar perfectly fits the pestle, providing plenty of space for the herbs and spices for grinding. The interplay between the two parts also enables a particularly effective cradle-like motion due to the surface friction. The durability of the Rocca not only means you can easily move the pestle back and forth in the mortar, but you can also use it to make a powerful top-down motion. In this way, exceptionally hard spices can be smashed! The mortar has non-slip rubber feet which keep the mortar securely in place and protect work surfaces. After crushing aromatic and tasty herbs and spices, the two parts of the Rocca pestle and mortar can be cleaned easily under running water.

Prepare herbs, spices and sauces the way our ancestors did — with handmade stone tools. Members of the Comonfort Group present this traditional footed molcajete or stone mortar, crafted by hand from volcanic basalt. The pestle, called a tejolote, is used to grind or crush the foodstuffs in the mortar. The molcajete can also be used as a unique serving dish for salsa or guacamole. The artisans recommend that the molcajete be "cured" before the first use. To cure it, place some dried beans, corn or rice in the bowl and grind with the pestle until pulverized. Allow the pulverized grain to sit for 15 minutes. Once this has been done, the molcajete can be hand-washed and allowed to dry. This step will ensure that any stone dust remaining from the carving process does not affect the food.

Our mortar and pestle offers a traditional look with a nice solid feel. It is very effective at reducing herbs, spices, and nuts to powders or pastes. The classic, footed silhouette is designed to facilitate fine grinding of a wide variety of herbs, spices and grains. This centuries-old method is still considered the best way to release the true aromatic flavors.
