Some have pretty rough edges on the bottom. When they sit in the cabinet they do not lay completely flat and they make a nails on the chalkboard sound if you just pull the plate off of the other instead on lifting it all the way up to pull it out of the cabinet. The plates are heavy to hold therefore, I would keep that in mind if you are purchasing the set as a gift. the other pieces of the set do not feel any heavier than any other dish set I have owned..
