This small yet delicately fine statue of Krishna subduing the great serpent Kaliya symbolises the playful, mischievous, as well as powerfully divine qualities of our ‘makhan chor.’ Executed in the ‘madhuchista vidhana’ fashion or the lost wax technique, this bronze image portrays Krishna dancing atop the large hood of Kalinga, with its tail in one hand and the other hand raised in the fear dispelling ‘abhaya mudra’ gesture. Kalinga’s body is itself placed on a raised lotus pedestal, and Krishna is shown wearing a high ‘mukuta’ and ornaments over his body. It was upon the action of Kaliya, who had taken refuge in the waters of Yamuna near Vrindavan to escape Garuda, contaminating the water and scaring the nearby villagers, that Krishna sought to take matters into his own hands. When Kalinga interfered with Radha, Krishna jumped inside the water to wrestle with the great snake, stomping his weight on Kaliya’s hood which let go of all the toxic venom that the serpent had stored inside. Against the warnings of the villagers, Krishna started dancing on Kaliya, slowly decimating its life – and only stopped when his several wives begged to let him go.Krishna’s conquering over Kaliya’s nefarious presence is an oft-told story that inspires confidence among Krishna’s devotees, restoring faith in their saviour who shall cut through the vice of ego and lead the devout on the path of dharma. Exotic India provides several iterations of this mythic episode in sculpture, which can be viewed here.

Other significant attributes to note are the four arms of Lakshmi, typical in her iconographic depiction. The two arms in the back hold onto a lotus – which is also the pedestal on which she sits – and the two hands in the front are in the ‘abhaya mudra’ or the fear-dispelling posture, and the ‘varada mudra’ or the boon-granting posture. The lotus denotes knowledge, consciousness, liberation, and karma in dharmic traditions. The four hands are also emblematic of four aspects significant to Hinduism: dharma, kama, artha, and moksha. The bejewelled and garlanded figure is seated in the lotus posture, or ‘padmasana.’ The sculptural image is covered with an elaborate arch made up of paisley designs, and a ‘kirtimukha’ in the shape of a monster’s face with his fangs baring towards the viewer. As is with each of its depiction, the ‘kirtimukha’ is usually ornamental in nature. Gajalakshmi’s visual depiction has persisted over several centuries – especially along Buddhist sites, we have evidences coming from Bharhut and Kausambi; from the Somavamshi Dynasty; from Goa and the Konkan; and interestingly, from far-flung places like Cambodia as well, making the Gajalakshmi icon and enduring symbol worthy of note and acquisition.

A bottle-neck like narrow belly with mild folds, slender waist and heavy thighs, elegantly cast tall arms coming down to knees and broad curving shoulders define the exceptional beauty of Devi's form. This statue, cast in a posture of celestial dance, is the finest model of beauty as per Indian aesthetic tradition. The curves and knots of fingers, cast for giving expression to the desired 'bhava' or emotion, impart to the figure its exceptional appeal and effects. The figure of the goddess is so life-like that, while looking at it, one feels that she will step down the pedestal and will begin walking any moment. In Indian tradition, Devi, the manifestation of primordial female energy, has often been identified as one or the other of the Puranic deities, usually either as Parvati or as Lakshmi, and sometimes as both. However, before Devi emerged as Parvati or Lakshmi, she has, in scriptural tradition, her own cult also. As this tradition has it, Mahavishnu, soon after the great deluge subsided, emerged as a child floating on a fig leaf. The dismayed Mahavishnu questioned himself as to who he was and whatfor he was there. The silence broke and there emerged a voice: 'Sarvam khalvidamevaham nanyadasty sanatanam', that is, 'All that is, it is me. There is nothing lasting but me'. When Vishnu was yet in trance, he saw a female form, Devi, appear before him. She was attended by many powers representing primarily riches and prosperity, wisdom and intellect and love and womanhood. These three faculties incarnated respectively as Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati and Parvati. In later Trinity cult, Laksmi got associated with Vishnu, Saraswati with Brahma and Parvati with Shiva. Subsequently, there evolved other Devi forms and Mahavidyas, first five, then seven, then nine and then gradually more than fifty. The number of Mahavidyas was first seven and then ten. Later, when there developed Shaivism and Vaishnavism as two devotional cults, Devi forms, too, despite a single origin, took two different lines, the Shaivite and Vaishnavite. Lakshmi, the custodian of riches and prosperity, came to be the principal Vaishnavite deity and Parvati, representing perfect womanhood and perpetual love, Shaivite. In iconographic representations Parvati got associated with her attributes of Shiva and Laksmi those of Vishnu. Of the two Parvati has been more popular with sculptors and artists. Hence, in art, Devi merged with Parvati. This description by Prof. P.C. Jain and Dr. Daljeet. Prof. Jain specializes on the aesthetics of literature and is the author of numerous books on Indian art and culture. Dr. Daljeet is the curator of the Miniature Painting Gallery, National Museum, New Delhi. They have both collaborated together on a number of books.

Endowed with child-like innocence, mischief in eyes and carefree disposition, the cool, soft and benign elephant-headed Ganesha is invoked primarily for removing obstacles and assuring a hassle-free start to any enterprise. Indeed, no occasion in India, whether it be the inauguration of an office or the foundation stone of a temple, is begun till Lord Ganesha has been worshipped. Not only this, his continuing presence in any home or office is said to ensure a hassle free existence. According to the strict rules of Hindu iconography, Ganesha figures with only two hands are taboo. Hence, Ganesha figures are most commonly seen with four hands which signify their divinity. Some figures may be seen with six, some with eight, some with ten, some with twelve and some with fourteen hands, each hand carrying a symbol which differs from the symbols in other hands, there being about fifty seven symbols in all, according to the findings of research scholars. The most striking feature of Ganesha is his elephant head , symbolic of auspiciousness, strength and intellectual prowess. All the qualities of the elephant are contained in the form of Ganesha. The elephant is the largest and strongest of animals of the forest. Yet he is gentle and, amazingly, a vegetarian, so that he does not kill to eat. He is very affectionate and loyal to his keeper and is greatly swayed if love and kindness are extended to him. Ganesha, though a powerful deity, is similarly loving and forgiving and moved by the affection of his devotees. But at the same time the elephant can destroy a whole forest and is a one-man army when provoked. Ganesha is similarly most powerful and can be ruthless when containing evil. Again, Ganesha's large head is symbolic of the wisdom of the elephant. His large ears, like the winnow, sift the bad from the good. Although they hear everything, they retain only that which is good; they are attentive to all requests made by the devotees, be they humble or powerful. Ganesha's trunk is a symbol of his discrimination (viveka), a most important quality necessary for spiritual progress. The elephant uses its trunk to push down a massive tree, carry huge logs to the river and for other heavy tasks. The same huge trunk is used to pick up a few blades of grass, to break a small coconut, remove the hard nut and eat the soft kernel inside. The biggest and minutest of tasks are within the range of this trunk which is symbolic of Ganesha's intellect and his powers of discrimination. The little mouse who is Ganesha's preferred vehicle, is another enigmatic feature in his iconography. At a first glance it seems strange that the lord of wisdom has been granted a humble obsequious mouse quite incapable of lifting the bulging belly and massive head that he possesses. The mouse is, in every respect, comparable to the intellect. It is able to slip unobserved or without our knowledge into places which we would have not thought it possible to penetrate. In doing this it is hardly concerned whether it is seeking virtue or vice. The mouse thus represents our wandering, wayward mind, lured to undesirable or corrupting grounds. By showing the mouse paying subservience to Lord Ganesha it is implied that the intellect has been tamed through Ganesha's power of discrimination.
