For safety's sake, a red light illuminates while in use and the handles stay cool to the touch. The lid is great. It's clear glass and has a vent hole. I love that I can see how everything is coming together without having to lift the lid and let all the heat escape. I've only had mine for a month so I can't really vouch for durability but I do attest that mine still looks and works like brand new. I highly recommend this Nesco slow cooker.
