The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. I really like the fact it is an L-shaped desk; we are going to use it in a spare bedroom for our small business. I need all of the features this desk offers: 5-tier bookshelf, 2 drawers, 1 file drawer, 59" long desktop with a depth of 21", 2 power outlets and 2 USB outlets. All of these features are perfect for running a small business and will make getting my work done more efficiently. The user manual is 50 pages long - I'm already estimating it will take at least 4 hours to assemble! And according to the manual, 2 people are needed in order to flip certain parts.
