The customs of Cote d'Ivoire inspire as he carves a magnificent Dan mask. The Dan, also known as the Yacouba, have traditionally inhabited the mountainous regions of Cote d'Ivoire. Transforming polished sese wood into an extraordinarily expressive mask, the artisan portrays a personage thought to protect people from the evil ones when they are away from home.

Salihu Ibrahim crafts an extraordinary monkey mask with the artistic stylizations of Liberia's Dan people. Reserved for durbars, its purpose is to entertain those who have traveled miles and anxiously await the arrival of the chiefs. Ibrahim carves the sese wood mask by hand and adorns it with white clay details and jute.

Deep red eyes seem all-seeing, their color blazing against narrow cheeks beneath a forehead heavy with repoussé. The elegant mask takes its white tones from applications of clay. "This mask is used during the Nkyidwo festival by the Essumeja people in Ghana's Asanti region. The rituals are held in the Asantemanso forest, a place known to be the ancestral origin of the Asantes. These rituals are performed to invoke the constant protection of the spirit world and the ancestors," Abdul Aziz Mohamadu explains. He names the piece Abanbo – "Protection" in the Akan language.

Beijing opera, or Peking opera, is a kind of Chinese opera and has a 200-year-long history. In ancient times, Beijing opera was performed mostly on stage in the open air, tea houses, or temple courtyards. The actors change masks onstage, unbeknownst to the audience. This technique is known as changing faces. This Alex Zeng creation is an homage to that time and the amazing art and variety of these masks. The eyes seem to peer into your soul as you gaze at this amazing piece of work. As always, this piece is framed in a black wood. It is also hand signed by the artist.

I like making jaguar heads because they remind me of my Maya ancestors. To them the jaguars protected the fields and mountains. They regarded the jaguar as a deity that they honored at the beginning of a harvest, says Costelli. According to Maya cosmogony, the jaguar is represented by the Ix day of the Maya calendar. It symbolizes strength and vigor, as well as feminine and feline energies. Canil carves the mask by hand from pinewood and paints it with extraordinary artistry.

Awudu Saaed is inspired by the art and customs of the Frafra people for the design of this extraordinary mask. Known also as Fare-fare, they reside in northern Ghana and southern Burkina Faso. In Saaed's original mask design, the antiqued sese wood mask features a jute beard around the proud visage and diagonal ridges on the crown representing braided hair. Magnificently embossed aluminum adorns the forehead and cheeks representing tribal markings.

"It is buried with a king who has passed away to show that he isn't traveling to the new world alone."
