Wooden Sailboat Model

Built in 1898, the regatta cutter Pen Duick was one of the most beautiful sailing boats. She was abandoned after running aground in the muddy flats of the Loire. The legendary sailor, Eric Tabarly, who rescued and lovingly restored her with the other sailor were lost off the southeast coast of Wales on the stormy night of June 14, 1998, the same year that PEN DUICK reached its hundredth birthday.

It was powerful enough to go up against the most formidable ships in the French and British navies. In 1705, the San Felipe and 11 other Spanish ships waged a furious and heroic battle against 35 British ships. After 24 hours of fighting, the San Felipe was captured but was so badly damaged that it could not be salvaged as a prize. It sank with several tons of gold.

This model is a smaller-scale version of a much larger version such as the USS Constitution 36" and the 56". The model is handcrafted from beautiful wood such as rosewood, mahogany, teak, and along with various other exotic wood. The hull is constructed using a plank-on-frame method, each strip of exotic wood is carefully joined together to form a smooth hull. This model is completely hand-built to spec by skillful and creative master craftsmen; you will be amazed at how real it looks. The ship has a clear varnished coating followed by amazing details. On the ship, you will spot amazing details such as wooden bowsprit, foremast, mainmast, and mizzen mast. They are all connected to numerous fabric sails with detailed stitching, all rigging is painstakingly fastened by hand in matching colors. There's a small wooden cabin with a wooden boat on the main deck. On the quarter-deck, there's a wooden cabin. There are wooden fences surrounding the teak deck area toward the quarter deck area. You can easily spot a large number of cannons on both sides of the hull, and other crafted parts on the front and back of the ship. There's also a wooden rudder to help the ship maneuver in the right direction. An attached wooden stand with a nameplate engraved "USS Constitution" is standard on this model. The model was built according to scale through original plans, pictures, and drawings. Manufacturers absolutely use no plastic parts only the highest quality wood parts. This model is carefully secure and packed inside a wooden crate for easy shipping purposes.

The 19th century racing yacht, America, was given its name after the first international sailing trophy that it won - the Americas Cup. This schooner was designed by George Steers for Commodore John Cox Stevens and a syndicate from the Yacht Club of New York. On Aug 22, 1851, the America won by over 20 minutes in the Royal Yacht Squadrons 53 mile regatta around the Isle of Wight, capturing the ''One Hundred Sovereign Cup.'' Spectating at the race, Queen Victoria asked an attendant who was second, and recieved the famous reply: ''There is no second, your Majesty.''

The endeavor was hailed as the most beautiful J-Class yacht ever built. She was the best and most impressive sailboat that Britain ever built to race in America's Cup series. Endeavour had speed as well as beauty. Built in 1933 by T.O.M. Sopwith, the undisputed leader of the British aircraft industry, Endeavour possessed many new and innovative devices, including below-deck winches, new sail designs, and an improved spinnaker. Even with an amateur crew, she came closer to winning the Cup than any other challenger up to that time. The endeavor was a faster yacht than her contender Rainbow. She beat Rainbow in the first two races. However, the American team was a much more OK crew and defeated Endeavour all the next three races by out-thinking her captain. In the third race, as a direct result of Vanderbilt, the skipper of ''Rainbow'', failing to pull away, the yachts almost collided when Endeavour had the right of way. Sopwith raised the protest flag after the race in accordance with British rules. The race committee dismissed the protest as the American rules stated the protest flag is to be flown at the time of the foul. This prompted a British writer to comment, ''Britannia rules the waves, but America waives the rules.'' When Endeavour returned to England she continued to dominate the British racing scene until 1938 when she was laid up for the duration of World War II. H.M.S. Sovereign of the Seas, launched in 1637, was the most powerfully armed ship in the world in its day. It was originally going to have 90 guns, but King Charles I personally insisted that a ''great ship'' be built for the English Royal Navy, so it went to sea with 102 bronze guns. The vessel was the most extravagantly decorated warship in the Royal Navy, completely adorned from stern to bow with gilded carvings. The ship was later renamed Sovereign and then Royal Sovereign. It was destroyed by fire in 1697 in Chatham.

This model ship is very well made and looks beautiful on display. The wood finish is smooth and rich, and the small details like the ropes, masts, and flag are carefully done. The three-masted topsail schooner Atlantic was one of twelve vessels that competed for the 1905 Emperor's Cup, a prize put up by Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm for a race between New York and the Lizard (the extreme tip of Cornwall). Atlantic won the cup by achieving a time of twelve days and four hours. In one 24-hour period, she ran 348 nautical miles. She was taken up by the US Navy in both world wars and was eventually acquired by the US Coast Guard Academy. Although the Atlantic was built as a racing craft, she had a stateroom accommodation for seven people. Launched in 1903, she won the Kaisers Cup in a very exciting race by crossing the Atlantic in 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute, 19 seconds.

Beautiful statement piece to have in your home! We wanted something unique and used it in place of a guest book at our costal-themed wedding. It is now filled with names written on the sails, and is beautiful. I had my father put it together, so I can’t attest to how the set up was. The bow has a piece of wood that the sails are connected to that inserts into the hull. You can see in the photo that it must have popped out at some point, and is leaning up against the hull. This likely happened when it was transported to our venue, but it is easy to pop back into place- just beware that this can happen. It is very well-made and we received countless compliments! The name of the Cutty Sark tall ship comes from the short shirt worn by the flee-footed witch in the Robert Burns poem, tam o'Shanter. Designed by Hercules Linton in Dumbarton, Scotland, the Cutty Sark was launched in 1869. The Cutty Sark was initially designed and meant for trading tea with China. Crafted to race across the globe to sack immense profits before other European traders, the Cutty Sark was built for speed. In the memorable race between the Cutty Sark and Thermopylae in 1872, the Cutty Sark lost her rudder after passing through the Sunda Straight and arrived in London a week after their competitor. What makes the Cutty Sark the hero of this race was that she continued the race with a makeshift rudder instead of putting into port for repairs, and in spite of that only lost by a week. Inevitably, the clipper ships lost out to the more powerful steam boats, which were more reliable, and thus returned goods more consistently. The Cutty Sark won the reputation as the fastest ship in her size when she ran 360 nautical miles in 24 hours during a run for Australian Wool trade. The Cutty Sark is the world's sole surviving extreme slipper, with the majority of her hull fabric surviving from her original construction in the 1860s. The Cutty Sark is preserved as a museum ship in Greenwich, which is in south-east London.

The Corsair Pirate Ship: The Brigantine had a square-rigged foremast and fore-and-aft sails attached to the main mast, allowing it quick maneuverability while maintaining twice the cargo space of a sloop. It quickly became one of the most popular ships among pirates due to its versatility. On average, a brigantine held as many as 100 pirates and was decked with cannons. Privateers: The piracy in the Caribbean was a result of the relationships between larger international trends within colonies. Due to the massive cost of naval control, private vessels were commissioned for a substantial share of whatever plunders could be captured from enemies. The substantial profits from privateering resulted in noble investors realizing the large return in working with pirates. Buccaneers: The term 'Buccaneer' arrived in the 1630's. The original Buccaneers were colonial fugitives forced to survive on open waters. These naval skills were easily and readily transferred over into piracy, their combat was regarded as ferocious. The buccaneers operated with colonial support from colonies fighting against the Spanish armada until the 1700s where their activities were granted legality. The buccaneers were civilized and peculiar as compared to the pirate stigma. Their pirate crews operated through democracy, and the captain was voted upon. As a leader he had to prove his worth in both democracy and in battle. Plunder was divided into shares depending on the worth of the officers, whether they had greater skills or took greater risks. The end of the classic age of Piracy: Piracy declined with the rise of the military and national armies in Europe. The call for mercenaries dwindled following the end of the 30 years war and national power expanded. As armies were brought under Royal control, privateering was quickly obliterated. Naval missions stretched to cover the destruction of piracy. By the 1720s it was difficult to locate piracy in an of the open seas.

In its day, there was no yacht like the Bluenose II, a fishing schooner that combined efficiency, beauty and speed. It was built in Nova Scotia in 1921 to fish the rough waters off the coast of Newfoundland. It would stay out on the sea until its holds were full of cod, using salt to preserve its catch. But the Bluenose left its mark in history as a racing ship. For 17 straight years it won the International Fisherman's Trophy, awarded to the winner of races among real fishing schooners that worked the Grand Banks. The races created a heated rivalry between the greatest deep-sea schooners from Newfoundland in Canada and those from Gloucester, Mass. With Capt. Angus Walters at its helm, the Bluenose II prevailed year after a year and it became an enduring symbol of the maritime spirit. The Bluenose II was lost off Haiti in 1946.

The ship looks fantastic in my office. Saying that, some technical assembling was required and minor repairs, which took approximately 6 hours. There was a sense of pride and accomplishment working through the assembly and repairs. I would definitely recommend this model if one has the patience and ability to read directions.. William. H.M.S. Victory was the ultimate British fighting vessel: 227 feet long with 104 guns and 850 men when at full capacity. It was launched in 1765 and is most famous as Adm. Horatio Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Nelson was shot and killed during the battle. H.M.S. Victory is the oldest naval ship still in commission. It has been restored and rests in dry docks at Portsmouth, England. The ship in Portsmouth is the sixth ship with the name Victory in the Royal Navy. There has been great interest in the fifth Victory ship, which was built 15 years earlier and whose wreckage was found recently by Odyssey Marine Exploration.

The U.S.S. Constitution, a three-mast frigate, is the world's oldest commissioned warship. Built primarily with dense southern live oak, its hull was 21 inches thick in an era when 18 inches was common. Paul Revere forged the copper spikes and bolts that held the planks in place. The 204-foot-long ship was first put to sea in 1798 and its most famous era of naval warfare was the War of 1812 against Britain, when it captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five warships, including the H.M.S. Guerriere. It was during the ferocious battle with the Guerriere that British seamen, astonished at how their cannonballs were bouncing off the Constitution's hull, cried out, ''Sir, Her sides are made from Iron!'' Hence, the nickname, ''Old Ironsides.'' The Constitution today is national landmark and is docked in Boston.

The Queen Mary is considered by many as the pinnacle of British passenger shipbuilding. The canard Line's Star Flagship, Queen Mary, was laid down for construction as the Great depression gripped Europe, rendering circumstances unfeasible for ship building. Thus, the construction was held up from 1931 to 1934. The thousand foot passenger ship was built to trump its French rival to the crown of luxury, the Normandie. One of the most appealing characteristics of the Queen Mary was her great speed. Coupled with great luxury and comfort, this factor earned amazing profits for her owners until the outbreak of the Second World War, which found her in a New York Harbor. After being idle for half a year, the Queen Mary re-entered service as a troopship, traveling unescorted from New York to Sydney. Ferrying troops between the Suez and Australia until the United States decided to take part in the fight, the Germans reportedly offered a quarter million reward for sinking this ridiculously fast passenger boat which their submarines could not keep up with. With its speed and finesse along the waters, the Queen Mary bested any warship afloat and adopted the nickname, ''the Gray Ghost.'' The third largest passenger ship ever to set sail in the North Atlantic seaway, and the largest to survive, the Queen Mary is one of the recent reminders of the artistic and industrial genius that dominated the North Atlantic Ocean for over a century. The Harvey was built in 1847 in the state of Maryland. She was an able sailer working out of the port of Galveston Texas. At the turn of the Century, she was making several voyages a year between Galveston and the ancient Jewish port of Jaffa which at the time was still under the Ottoman empire. Her main cargo was hemp used to make ropes for the rigging of ships.

The Constellation, designed by John Lenthall, was launched in baltimore on September 7, 1797. On February 5, 1799. She was captured the French 36 gun frigate ''LInsurgente'' off the island of Nevis in the West indies. She remained in service until 1854 when she was broken up at Norfolk, Virginia. Re-commissioned in 1940, she served as relief flagship for the Atlantic fleet and the Battleship Division Five from 1941 to 1943. She is currently afloat at Baltimores Inner Harbor.

I have about a dozen ship models in this price range and they are all very nice. Your USS Constellation may just be one of the best. The scale / size of the model is top notch. The Shamrock V was launched by Sir Thomas Lipton after his fourth had lost. For his challenger, Lipton turned once more to Charles Nicholson, who produced a beautiful sloop. When the races started, Shamrock found herself pitted against Enterprise. In the best-of-seven series, Enterprise won four, Shamrock failed to score a single victory.

The original Lady Washington was a 90-ton merchant sloop. She sailed around Cape Horn and participated in the fur and pelt trade with the coastal Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest and in tea and porcelain across the Pacific in China. She was captained originally by Robert Gray, and later by John Kendrick, former captain of her larger sailing partner, the Columbia Rediviva (Kendrick insisted he and Gray switch vessels mid-journey). Under the command of Kendrick, she was refitted as a brig (she was formerly a sloop). She became the first American vessel to reach the island of Japan in an unsuccessful attempt to move some unsold pelts. The Lady remained in the Pacific trade and eventually foundered in the Philippines in 1798.

Wood pattern of hull on the model I received is different than example on website. My model has hull of alternating bands of dark and light wood....giving the ship a striped appearance. Also, all-white rigging doesn't match example on website. Best to make it dark rigging as in all other models by Old Modern Handicrafts. H.M.S. Sovereign of the Seas, launched in 1637, was the most powerfully armed ship in the world in its day. It was originally going to have 90 guns, but King Charles I personally insisted that a ''great ship'' be built for the English Royal Navy, so it went to sea with 102 bronze guns. The vessel was the most extravagantly decorated warship in the Royal Navy, completely adorned from stern to bow with gilded carvings. The ship was later renamed Sovereign and then Royal Sovereign. It was destroyed by fire in 1697 in Chatham.

The three masted Xebec with its lateen sails was used for centuries in the Mediteranean as a merchant ship because of its speed and shallow draught. It was not long before Corsairs, the pirates of the Mediteranean, decided on the Xebec as their vessel of choice for lighting fast attacks on heavier ladened merchant ships. With its fourteen cannons slug low in the waists, the Xebec would hole her prey just inches above the waterline making escape impossible. Six culverins were mounted along the poop deck for close action or just in case the crew tried to mutiny. Oars were used when the wind failed giving the Xebec the upper hand in attacking other vessels or fleeing the authorities.

This Omega 46 is one of the most beautiful yachts on the water. Classic looks combined with the most modern technics. Designed by Ron Holland, build by Omega in Sweden. It has beautiful teak decks and cockpit, very spacious cockpit benches, superb lines and the best quality in finish and detail. Equipped options like an electric winch in the cockpit for setting the mainsail, a bowthruster for extra comfort in the harbour and an electric anchorwinch with extra controls at the helm. The magnificent and very spacious interior has 2 large double rooms, one in the frontship, one in the rear. The enormous galley has a fridge and a freezer. The salon is very comfortable with beautiful upholstery. In the front ship is a large wet room with toilet and separate shower compartment.

I would rate this five stars but I am a keen sailor and deduct one star because the boom on the boat I received was about an inch too long and fouled the back stay, though this was easily trimmed to the right length, but the mainsail on the boat I received has a very loose leach and that is not easy to correct without recutting the sail..
