The self-watering feature prevents overwatering and underwatering as long as the drainage plug on the bottom of the planter is removed. This is because the water level will always drop to the top of the overflow drain. Your plant will then absorb the water as needed. If you're worried about underwatering and/or if it's hard to tell if the plant is dry, then we recommend watering frequently to avoid any chance of underwatering. That ensures there is always water available in the reservoir. Just make sure the drainage plug is removed so that the water does not overfill the reservoir, potentially causing watering-logging and root rot.

This is nice, but.... It took a lot longer to put together than I wanted. The wood is not finished, so you need to do that yourself. That also adds to the cost. I bought a "green" varnish for the inside and regular for the outside. Be careful not to split the wood screwing together the boxes if you are off center. Great privacy trellis to hide winery equipment on a patio. Assembly took about 45 minutes. Product is supposed to coated for weather, so time will tell if it rusts. The planter is perfect for my needs. It looks exactly like the picture and was delivered swiftly. I really like how lightweight it is. I'm using it for some faux flowers against wall on my covered deck. (Not sure you'd want to use for real plants.)
