The trunk is as it looks. Hinges seem strong but even if they weren't, the wood is so light that it wouldn't hurt fingers. If you are looking for a solid piece of furniture, this isn't it. Have built one of two so far. Nice solid wood. Not a huge fan of the plastic inserts twist in design for the construction, but you get what you pay for.
