This barrel planter is built using an oak wood wine barrel that has been cut in half horizontally, and then in half again vertically. We then use cedar to build a new back and bottom, using the tongue and groove method. If you plan to use the wine barrels for planting, then drainage holes are needed, so excess water may drain out of the containers without drowning and killing the plants. We sand each barrel and stave carefully to bring out the unique grains of the white oak while leaving the black marks where the rings of the barrel were. Two pilot holes make it simple to install and black wooden buttons are included to cover the screws. It is given a matte finish which brings out the grains of the oak and a nice light walnut color. Mounting hardware included. These are made with 1/2 length of a normal whiskey barrel stave, so are roughly 17" tall and can vary between 3-5" wide. WOW!!! This is definitely a piece that makes a statement. And what was exactly what we wanted to complete the vibe in our bar. A few notes to anyone on the fence.....it arrived much sooner than we anticipated. Projected delivery was the end of June and it arrived mid-May. It was well packaged in a wooden crate around a box. Delivery drivers were fantastic and efficient in dropping the crate exactly where we wanted it. It is impressive how sturdy it is. I anticipated some flexing or movement when not on the wallbbecause it is so large, but it is solid. Lights do not come with this piece as the description notes, however, they are quite affordable at any home improvement store and it took literally 15 minutes to get the lights where we wanted them. Installation was smooth with two strong guys. And we are so impressed with the results. Still need to organize bottles, etc....but this gives you a good idea of how this piece can be used. It is not an issue with us because we are simply in love with this piece, but worth noting, that some bottles may be too tall. From our liquor cabinet the only bottle that did not fit was the Grey Goose. We can live without it or keep it in the cupboard. Would not hesitate to order again.. Amanda. Beaufort, NC.
