The site of the first Swedish settlement in America, Wilmington bears a distinctive place in the nation’s history and remains one of the most iconic cities on the East Coast. The most populous city in the state of Delaware, its location at the confluence of the Christina and Brandywine Rivers, whose banks are now home to the famous riverwalk. By the late nineteenth century, the city remained an economic hub within the Delaware Valley and had enjoyed a period of significant prosperity in the years following the conclusion of the American Civil War. In 1664 the British began colonizing the city, which led to brief battles in the area with the Dutch. Panoramic maps were widely popular during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and bear a distinctive aesthetic. Their characteristic style immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Produced and published by the H.H. Bailey company, this stunning birds-eye perspective contains considerable detail and artistic flourishes. They served as marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike and featured prominent civic and economic opportunities. By the 1870s, Wilmington remained one of the largest producers of iron ships, gunpowder, and leather goods. Wealthy industrialists and merchants constructed large homes on wide avenues with Victorian architecture that remain to this day. This authentic piece of cartographical history depicts the city as the nation rebuilt after the end of the Civil War, and numerous Southerners established communities across the mid-Atlantic seaboard. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Published in the waning years of the Civil War, this depiction of the Confederate capital Richmond, Virginia, shows the city at a pivotal point in its rich history. The city had been the main target of Union Forces throughout the conflict. Richmond was the home to five major railroad hubs, which allowed troops, munitions, and supplies to spread throughout the South. As Union forces continued to advance on Richmond in 1865, Confederate troops began to evacuate the city, and more than a fourth was intentionally burned. David Van Nostrand’s New York-based publishing house produced this map which notes the locations of Confederate fortifications and would have been an invaluable tool for the strategic planning of the Union Forces leaders. Prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, Richmond was thriving with a robust economy based around manufacturing, milling, and ironworks, which were the largest in the South. By 1850 Richmond was connected to the coast with the Richmond and Peterson Railroad. This expanded access created a population boom as immigrants eager to work flocked to the city and established neighborhoods along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. The minimal style and unique aesthetic of this map immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible link between the past and the present. Richmond is one of the most iconic cities of the American South, and its place in history cannot be understated. This rare map is truly an authentic piece of cartographical history. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. On the Sea Wall with John Paul Jones by N.C. Wyeth is a captivating 1928 oil on canvas illustration from his work on the Revolutionary War novel Drums, masterfully capturing a contemplative moment where the legendary naval hero John Paul Jones stands atop a sea wall, gazing thoughtfully out over a bustling harbor filled with crowded sailing ships, down the long narrow channel toward the open sea. Rendered in Wyeth's signature dramatic style, the painting features rich, vibrant colors, dynamic composition, and meticulous detail in the rigging, sails, and atmospheric seascape, evoking a sense of longing, adventure, and historical gravitas as Jones whistles dolefully, embodying the spirit of American naval heroism and the call of the high seas—perfect for adding timeless patriotic depth and artistic sophistication to any collection.
