In Greek mythology, the Danaides were the fifty daughters of King Danus of Argos, who were married to the fifty sons of Aegypyus, a mythical King of Egypt, to save Argos. All but one of the Danaides killed their husbands on their wedding night, and in turn were killed. The illusion of movement is evident as the tragic sisters were forever condemned to carry water endlessly, filling a leaking bath to wash away their sins. John William Waterhouse, the well-known Victorian painter who embraced the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's style, communicating his aesthetic vision through the vivid use of color, Neo-classical, formalism, and realistic depictions of strong women using romantic poems, Greek myths, and Arthurian legends. The authentic stretched canvas replica painting captures the original work's texture, depth of color, and even its subtle brushstrokes, which are applied by hand. This replica European style, bright gold-toned, ribbed frame is cast in quality designer resin with an acanthus leaf and floret border that draws the eye toward the beautiful image. Proudly printed and framed in the USA using imported molding.
